Lunch & Learn – LGBTQ+ Relationships and EFT with Emily Johnson, LMFT
EFT’s cycle-mapping and attachment framework offer powerful tools for relational work, but the model’s foundational research and language often assume heterosexual, cisgender, monogamous dyads. This presentation/discussion invites us to examine where EFT’s core assumptions fall short for LGBTQ+ relationships – including chosen family, relationship structure/norms, marginalization stress, and gender-diverse attachment expression. Let’s discuss practical adaptations for applying attachment-based interventions without erasing the variance of queer relational identities.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify at least three heteronormative assumptions that are fully embedded in traditional EFT theory and research.
- Identify and describe how identity-related stress and trauma can shape attachment patterns and injuries in Queer Relationships.
- Apply two adaptations of standard EFT interventions (e.g. softening, cycle-tracking) for use with LGBTQ+ Relationships.
- Recognize and identify at least three common clinical missteps when applying the standardized EFT framework to Queer Relationships, and explore alternative approaches.
