Parts Work and EFT: Working with Protectors to Access Primary Emotion

EFT therapists are skilled at helping clients move beneath secondary reactivity toward primary emotion, attachment fears, and longings. At times, however, anger, withdrawal, hopelessness, intellectualization, or other protective responses remain firmly in place despite our best efforts to validate and deepen emotion.

This presentation will explore how IFS-informed parts work can complement EFT by helping therapists approach these reactive responses as protectors with understandable concerns and intentions. We will look at ways to befriend and collaborate with protectors, gain permission to approach more vulnerable emotional experience, and identify additional parts that may criticize, suppress, or fear vulnerability. The emphasis will be on practical ways parts language and interventions can deepen work EFT therapists are already doing.

Learning objectives

Participants will be able to:

• Describe how protective parts can maintain secondary reactivity and limit access to primary emotion and attachment needs.
• Identify ways to explore a protector’s intentions, fears, and concerns rather than attempting to bypass or suppress it.
• Recognize internal protective responses that criticize or inhibit vulnerable emotional experience.
• Describe how compassion and permission-based parts interventions can facilitate greater access to primary attachment fears and longings.
